Introvert (psychology) is a person who tends to shrink from social contacts and to become preoccupied with their own thoughts.

Introversion is “the state of or tendency toward being wholly or predominantly concerned with and interested in one’s own mental life”. Introverts tend to be more reserved and less outspoken in large groups. They often take pleasure in solitary activities such as reading, writing, drawing, and using computers. The archetypal artist, writer, sculptor, engineer, composer, and inventor are all highly introverted. An introvert is likely to enjoy time spent alone and find less reward in time spent with large groups of people, though they tend to enjoy interactions with close friends. They prefer to concentrate on a single activity at a time and like to observe situations before they participate. Introverts are easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation from social gatherings and engagement. They are more analytical before speaking.

Introversion is not the same as shyness. Introverts choose solitary over social activities by preference, whereas shy people avoid social encounters out of fear.[wiki]

Apathetic. Apathy (also called impassivity or perfunctoriness) is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life.

Hedonism is a school of philosophy which argues that pleasure has an ultimate importance and is the most important pursuit of humanity.

recycle-by-number

Every time I drink a bottle of iced tea or mineral water, I used to wonder what the number at the bottom of the container means. I’ve always thought that it is the number of times the plastic was recycled, I was wrong.

The numbers indicate the types of plastic used in making the container. There are seven types of consumer plastic or resin and are identified by a number inside three chasing arrows.

#1 PETE: Polyethylene Terephthalate.
Commonly used in soft drinks, juice, and cough syrup containers and microwave trays.

#2 HDPE: High Density Polyethylene.
Commonly used in milk jugs, detergent and shampoo bottles.

#3 V: Polyvinyl Chloride.
Commonly used in film for meat packaging and some rigid plastic containers.

#4 LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene.
Commonly used in newspaper and grocery bags and butter cups lids.

#5 PP: Polypropylene.
Commonly used in yogurt containers and deli trays.

#6 PS: Polystyrene.
Commonly used in plastic cups and plates and to-go containers.

#7 OTHER: Other mixed resins.
Commonly used in mixed plastic containers or plastic products.

The numbers are used by recycling plants to determine if they can recycle the plastic or not, because there are some plants that only accept certain types of plastic.

Effects of coffee

I stumbled upon this article on my feed reader just a few minutes after I plurked about how sleepy I was at the office, even after drinking a black roast coffee.

If you are one of those who regularly drinks coffee… according to a recent article I’ve read, there are at least 10 benefits one can get from drinking a cup and 11 potential health risk. I don’t know if one outweighs the other, but here is a quick rundown.

The good side:

  1. Coffee is a rich source of antioxidants like chlorogenic acid.
  2. Coffee consumption is potentially protective against the development of type 2 diabetes.
  3. There is strong evidence that regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease.
  4. Coffee drinking may protect against liver cirrhosis.
  5. There is some evidence that coffee drinking may be protective against gallstone formation.
  6. Coffee consumption lowers the risk of kidney stones formation.
  7. Coffee drinking may decrease the serum uric acid level and lower the risk of gout in men.
  8. Many studies demonstrate the beneficial effects of caffeine in coffee on alertness, attentiveness, and wakefulness.
  9. There is some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable.
  10. Several studies comparing moderate coffee drinkers (about 2 cups a day) with light coffee drinkers (less than one cup a day) found that those who drank more coffee were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease later in life.

The bad side:

  1. Heart disease
  2. Heavy consumption of boiled coffee elevates blood total and LDL cholesterol levels.
  3. Coffee negatively affects the blood vessel tone and function.
  4. There is only little experimental evidence that caffeine causes cardiac arrhythmias.
  5. Although coffee consumption is not a significant risk factor for hypertension, it produces unfavourable effects on blood pressure.
  6. Heavy coffee consumption (4 cups=600 ml or more) can modestly increase the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women with a low calcium intake.
  7. High amounts of caffeine produce negative effect on sleep onset and sleep quality.
  8. Some people suffer from heartburn after drinking coffee.
  9. he caffeine in coffee is a mild diuretic and can increase the volume of urine excreted.
  10. Drinking a couple of cups of coffee a day has long been considered safe during pregnancy, but a new study finds that even this modest amount of caffeine could double a woman’s risk of miscarriage.
  11. Decaffeinated coffee may increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
