Upgrading too soon?

The much awaited Wordpress 2.5 will be released in a couple of days, but will you upgrade your Wordpress blogs immediately after its release?

Since it skipped 2.4 we can expect a major overhaul for our blogging software. New features will be added, old features will be enhanced, and bugs sorted out. Of course, most of us (Wordpress users) like to try out these exciting new changes as soon as possible.

But not for me.

The same reason why I’m still using WinXP instead of upgrading to WinVista. Most programs I regularly use are still not usable in Vista. And Vista contains lots of bugs than XP.

The moment you immediately upgrade to Wordpress 2.5 to more chances your plugins are going to break.

I usually wait after a couple of days (weeks) before upgrading anything. I look out for news, blog posts, comments, etc. about the software I’m going to upgrade to. If I see a lot of negative feedbacks, like this not working or that breaking, then I think twice before upgrading.

I don’t want my blog to be running in WP 2.5 with half the plugins not working or the theme I use breaking.

So I’ll wait, till the dust settles…

Konshu hiatus

It’s been a week since I last posted here. I’m doing a lot of stuff online and offline. Anyway, here are some thoughts and events that transpired within the week that passed.

  • According to my PMOG page, I’ve been playing it for 8 days now. Last week, I’ve installed the PMOG toolbar on my Firefox and from that day, I’ve been busy jumping from one website to another. I need the Datapoints from websites all over the web to level up.
  • Last Saturday, until Sunday, I tried to get the Indie badge from PMOG. The only condition is that I don’t go to any Google site, like Google reader or the Goole search page, within 24 hours online. I successfully completed that, but the badge still hasn’t appeared on my profile. I don’t know if that condition is affected by the Google analytics that is loading in the background from other websites aside from Google, like this blog for instance. I’m not sure if the PMOG toolbar monitors the URL at the address bar or the cache on my browser to determine if I haven’t visited any Google related site. If it is the latter, then I haven’t completed the 24 hours condition, since I visited this blog and my Tambayan.ph blog which contains Google analytics internally, thus loading a Google site in my Firefox cache.
  • Last night my primary association at PMOG turned from Shoat to Bedouin. Then early this morning Bedouin became my secondary association, then Benefactor became my primary. I don’t know what is happening, or there are some internal changes in the game (since it is still in Beta), but I was aiming to become a Seer.
  • As of this post, I still need 240 Datapoints to level up. I’m still at level 1 because I seldom go to websites externally, and most of them are already in my feed reader.
  • I’m planning to add a whole new section in this blog. I’m thinking along the lines of games, videos, music, and babes. I was thinking of launching these new sections by March 1. If this idea pushes through, then expect more content here.
  • When I encountered the Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe (Win32/Autoit.BD worm) virus from a friend’s USB flash drive, I was tempted to infect my PC with it, then create a removal process. Just like I did with the SSCVIHOST.exe worm. I scratched that idea, but I still want to create a guide to remove it.

That’s it for today, expect more posts by March.

BTW, the Japanese word konshu means “this week”.

I’m living in an internet-technology-deficit area

I have been living at this house since I arrived here in Metro Manila last 1988. Our subdivision is a few kilometers far from a commercialized area. I call this place my home, since I grew up here. My elementary school, high-school, and even college is near our place. So there are a lot of people I knew that live near our area. But the one thing I don’t like about here is the Internet access.

A couple of years ago, I subscribed to PLDT Vibe. The unlimited internet access using PLDT technology, it is only a dial-up connection using the regular modem in my PC. So you’ve might have guessed that my Internet at home is relatively slow. Although I don’t have problems with that arrangement, I tried to subscribe to a broadband service, since I regularly use the Internet 24/7. Yes, even if I’m sleeping, my PC is still connected to the Internet. Although the downside in a dial-up connection is that my phone line is always busy so no one can call me through my land line. They have to text me first on my mobile phone if they are going to call, then I just disconnect my Internet.

PLDT DSL is already available in our area, they have existing lines just outside (in the highway) of our subdivision. Unfortunately for us, PLDT doesn’t extend their service into our subdivision. I don’t know their reason, but they STILL won’t let their lines enter our subdivision. My cousin, whose house is just beside ours, already submitted his application more than 3 years ago. PLDT said that they can’t provide DSL yet in our place. So much for that option.

Last December 31, my cousin and I went to Globelines to subscribe for their broadband service. We knew that there is a current Globe broadband subscriber inside our subdivision that lives near us, so we assume that their service reach our area. But alas as fate would have it, Globe said that our street is a couple of meters far from the covered area. That sucks. But still, we insisted to get a subscription even if the signal is low. But they didn’t approve it, and suggested to apply after a couple of months, because they are currently expanding their service in our area.

After that, we went to Smart Bro, to try if their broadband service is applicable in our area. I didn’t subscribed, but my cousin did. The process was fast, you just need an ID and 999 php for initial payment, and they will install their unit within 3 days. I told my cousin to text me as soon as the service is installed in his PC. Unfortunately, again, after the tech guy tested their modem in our area, he said that their signal is not fully optimized in our area. That sucks.

To sum it all up, there is no PLDT DSL, Globe broadband, or Smart Bro in our area. Bayan Tel DSL? no we haven’t tried it yet. So for now I’ll just have to stick with this lousy dial-up connection I have at home.

Random Thoughts #1

This post is a start for a series of posts that are… random… or anything that comes into mind. I was thinking of a post like this last night, while I was on a long journey back home in a bus. Although I’m tired and somewhat sleepy, random thoughts filled my mind. Here are some that I remembered since last night:

  • If you are looking for cheap but high quality (small) anime figurines here in the Philippines, visit Toy Kingdom (in SM malls). Comic Alley is a good anime shop, but Toy Kingdom has much more figurines on sale than the former. While Comic Alley is usually filled with “common” animes like Naruto, Bleach, Tsubasa Chronicles, and endless hordes of Pokemon; Toy Kingdom has those anime which are not usually popular except for those true anime fans (and otakus).
  • And while on the subject of toys. Why do they call those toys that you need to assemble first then put it up in your display case, 4D? I mean it’s just 3D right? Why the 4D title?
  • Here in the Philippines, and contrary to popular belief, the fastest land based transportation (except trains) are the ordinary buses. Not those air conditioned ones, but those with open windows and the doors are at the middle part of the body. Mixed emotions and feelings are usually encountered while riding this land (to air) based transport. I’ve seen smiles on peoples faces that are on the rush to get to their destination. I’ve seen tears by an old lady at the back fearing for her life to end in this thrill-of-a-ride transportation. I’ve also seen angry men at the front shouting out loud that they have to get off the bus because their destination has a already passed a couple of blocks away. So if you are in a hurry and are passing through commonwealth or EDSA, just hop in an ordinary bus and be prepared to be blown away.
  • As a side note for above. I only ride ordinary buses in ‘extreme’ situations, like when it’s already early dawn. Because I don’t really like dirt in my face and pollution in my lungs.
  • A couple of years ago jeepney fares are much cheaper than aircon buses. Now it’s almost opposite. An example would be from SM Fairview (Quezon City) to Pleasant Hills Subd. (Bulacan). In a regular jeepney you pay 11 pesos, but in an aircon bus you only pay 10 pesos. One peso cheaper, with added aircon for a cool ride.

So there. This is the first of many randomness you may encounter in this blog.
