Free games, freeware games, open source games

There are a lot of free games around the Internet these days, most notably are the flash games. There are also other ‘legal’ downloadable ROMs using emulators. These ROMs I’m referring to are home brew, so they are free legally. But there are more out there, and this is where Wiki helps us.

You can actually download free games that are originally commercial versions. But due to the fact that they are old, they are already distributed freely.

Here are a list of lists that may help you get started on free games.

  • List of commercial games released as freeware. Commercial games released as freeware are games that, in their original license, were not considered freeware, but were re-released at a later date with a freeware license, sometimes as publicity for a forthcoming sequel or compilation release.
  • List of freeware games. This is a list of freeware video games implemented as traditional exe files that must be downloaded and installed. It excludes the multitude of online freeware games created with Adobe Flash and similar products. Freeware games are games that are released as freeware and can be downloaded and played, free of charge, for an unlimited amount of time and may be redistributed.
  • List of open source games. Open source games are computer games assembled out of, and are themselves, open-source software and open content; public domain games are also listed.
  • List of free first-person shooters

As soon as I get more sources, I’ll update this post. Stay tuned gamers.
