Iron Man The Incredible Hulk

Last Wednesday (April 30) my girlfriend and I watched the Iron Man movie. We had to take the last full show because she gets off on her work late 6pm. The movie was well done, and so it the visual effects. It was, for the lack of better word, one of the best movies from Marvel Studios. And because it was the last show, I didn’t see the bonus clip after the end credits.

I’ve already knew the origins of Iron Man and many important characters surrounding him. That was because as early as the year 1990, I was already exposed to the stories of Marvel Universe. Going back to the movie, as I was watching, I carefully observed a lot of characters. And here is my take on some of the characters.

  • As Tony Stark arrived at the party during the first half of the film, there was an old guy surrounded by women near the entrance before going inside. He mistakenly greeted him as Hugh Hefner (founder of Playboy). The old guy was actually Stan Lee (creator of Marvel Comics). Stan Lee also had cameos in most Marvel-related films such as Spider-man 1,2,3, X-Men 1,3, Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic Four 1,2, and more.
  • In the film, after Tony Stark goes after the villain, James looked at another uncompleted armor in the basement created by Stark and said “Next time, baby…” Tony Stark’s closest friend, who appears to always nags him is James Rhodes. Most of you won’t ring any bells when hearing his name, but he appears a lot on the film. Why? because he is War Machine. The other armor of Tony Stark which was colored silver/black. Which, if rumors are true, will appear as a spin-off movie from Iron Man.
  • There was this agent-guy who keeps popping up and showing before Pepper and Stark. He said he was not in any of the local government agencies, and that their agency name was Strategic Homeland Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate. The name was too long that I didn’t mind it at first. Near the end, Pepper asked him for his help. And at the end of the movie, he finally said the shorter version of the name of their agency which was S.H.I.E.L.D. Ah ha! So its them, the popular agency group from Marvel that sometimes hire the world’s best heroes to combat threat.

With this movie, the other various known characters from Marvel Comics are appearing one by one in the films, which may eventually lead to another Marvel Studios film. Now if you’ve watched past the end credits you will see a bonus clip which shows Nick Fury (agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) talking with Tony Stark.

“At the end of the credits, Stark comes home and finds Nick Fury in his living room -staring towards the window. He then turns to tell Stark he’s the not the only superhero in the world. Stark asks who he is, and Fury turns and says he’s “Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D, and I’m here to talk to you about The Avengers Initiative”. [Tambayan.ph]

Nick Fury agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Behind Nick Fury we can see various heroes from Marvel. On the left, top to bottom; Iron Man, Thor, and Luke Cage. And on the right; Daredevil, Nick Fury, and Spider-Man.

So after this movie, we will soon have War Machine, Nick Fury agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. The latter is a group of superheros which includes, among others, Captain America, Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk.

On the other side of the universe, The Avengers is the counterpart of DC Comics’s Justice League. And that group includes the well-known heroes from DC; Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter.

The characters from Marvel Comics are starting to conquer the big screen. It was first recognized after the success of Spider-man and the X-Men. And because of today’s technology the superhuman abilities of the characters that these actors portray can easily be created on films. I can still remember what the Spider-man TV series looked like when I was still a kid, compared to the visual effects of today, it was really outdated. You can view the roster of films coming from Marvel Studios and is related to the Marvel Universe at Wikipedia.

Now on the upcoming movie, The Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark will now appear as a cameo if, again, the rumors are true.

The scene shows a completely drunk General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (William Hurt) sitting in a bar when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) walks in. He says “I hear you’ve got an unusual problem.” “You should talk,” Ross slurs. Stark replies, “you should listen.” That was all we got to see, but there could be more because it cut rather quickly at the end. [Tambayan.ph]
