Life tips #9

I’ve you’ve read my previous post, you have probably guessed that I already lost all my starred items from Google Reader. So when I migrated my feeds into Bloglines, I scanned through them again from today’s date until the date when I posted #8.

Google Reader not working, moving to another aggregator

I haven’t posted anything on Tambayan.ph this past few days, mainly because I can’t access the site for 2 days at home. And when that was fixed, Google Reader is not loading properly on my browser. The site works on another computer outside, but not at home. I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.14 but it doesn’t load. I tried using Internet Explorer 6 and Opera, but still the same problem. The settings page on Google Reader is working though, but that’s just it. I also tried passing the website through a proxy in case my ISP is the one with a problem, still no luck.

Google Reader not loading

I don’t think my system or connection has a problem because all other Google sites is working, and even the settings page on Google Reader is working. The only thing not loading is the front page. I tried cleaning my cache, removing temp files, and reload the page, but still the same blank page appears. I looked around the net for possible solutions to this problem, but there wasn’t any. I came across a post that says Google Reader only works properly when using Internet Explorer 7. Well, that sucks, I don’t even want to use IE. The only good thing for Google Reader for now is that its settings page is still working, so that I can export my feeds, and import it to another service.

Google Reader settings

Since I can’t view my feeds from Google Reader (started last May 7, 2008), I’ll just move all my subscriptions to another feed aggregator. My two choices are: Bloglines and Fastladder. I created an account on both webware, then tried to add my feeds into it.

Bloglines is one of the popular RSS around, even before Google Reader arrived. Although the only thing I don’t want about it is that it loads much slower than Google Reader. On the other hand, Fastladder loads twice as fast, but have less features than Bloglines. I’m going to try both, separating my 192 subscription feeds on both products.

I also posted the same problem at Google Groups just in case ’someone’ will reply.

Here are some stuff I tried doing to fix it, but no success.

  • Load it on Firefox 2.0.0.14 browser. Don’t even suggest upgrading my browser to FF 3 beta, I don’t want to use a buggy software.
  • Load it on Internet Explorer 6.0. There are ’some’ who says that it works on IE 7. I downloaded the installer from Microsoft, and tried installing it. The installation contains errors and can’t continue. Well, so much for that. Besides, I don’t want to use IE, ever.
  • Load it on Opera 9.27. Still not working.
  • I reloaded the page many times on each browser, and waited for hours just to see if it will load. But it didn’t.
  • Cleaned the temp files and cache for all browser and even used CCleaner to remove everything, then reload the website. Still no luck.
  • Tried running the website through a proxy server. Still a blank page appears.
  • I reconnected my Internet connection, but that didn’t helped.

Google Reader is a good feed aggregator, but it seems I have to move to another one just because of this problem. Even if I can access it on ’some’ other computer or ’some’ other internet provider, but if I can’t access it on my PC at home, it’s totally useless.

Guess the Character and Anime Title Game

As promised from my previous post, here are the rules I made based on the collage game I created for the aforementioned forums.

Remember that this game is designed in a forum environment, and the image collage can be found on my previous post. And feel free to use this game (and the image collage) in your forums, you can also modify the rules to fit your style of gameplay. All that I ask in return is to post a comment here where you posted it, so I can see it. Don’t worry I won’t join the game since I already know the answers.

Guess the Character and Anime Title Game

How to play the game:

  1. Pick a NUMBER corresponding to the collage image.
  2. Then guess the NAME of the character and the ANIME TITLE it came from.
  3. Then post your guesses/answers, provided you follow the posting rules.
  4. The player who got the highest score by the end of the game wins.
  5. The game ends when all the images are guessed correctly.
  6. Have fun!

Game & Posting Rules:

  1. You CAN only post 3 answers per post. This is so that other players can catch up with the scores of the other players.
  2. You CANNOT double post. Meaning, you cannot post immediately after your post. You get no points for this.
  3. You CANNOT jump post. Meaning, you cannot post again after another player posted immediately after your post. You get no points for this.
  4. You CAN post after two (2) players posted after your previous post. This is to be fair and to give chance to other players.
  5. You CAN post answers by another player to add to your score. You will gain a score if it is a right answer but you will get behind. That means if you keep on copying other players answers you’ll only be lagging behind their score.
  6. RULE #2 and #3 can only be disregarded AFTER 24 HOURS in which no other player have posted after the last post.
  7. A player will be DISQUALIFIED if he/she repeats the action stated on SCORING #6. If he/she posted more than 3 answers twice on a single post.

Scoring:

  1. You get one (1) point for each correct COMPLETE name. If character has only one name, you get the whole one (1) point.
  2. You get one (1) point for each correct COMPLETE anime title.
  3. You get one-half (.5) point for each correct INCOMPLETE name.
  4. You get one-half (.5) point for each correct INCOMPLETE anime title.
  5. On a single post you can get a maximum of six (6) points.
  6. If you posted four (4) or more set of answers you will get a deduction of two (2) points for each succeeding answers.
  7. Repeated answer by the same player does not get any points.
  8. In-case the GAMES ENDS while I’m not around (to moderate the game), the computation of the scores will stop on the post when the game ends.
  9. In-case of WRONG SPELLINGS, its ok as long as it makes sense. Since on various sources I’ve found out that there are many different spellings on names and titles.
  10. Some animes have alternate titles (i.e. Japanese/English). This is also ok and corresponds to a point.
  11. It doesn’t matter if you guessed your answer or you copied it from another player. You still get the points for your post.
  12. Whoever gets the most points FIRST wins. So there is NO TIE to this game.
  13. I will be actively monitoring this thread and calculate the points of each player. Which I will post on random occasions, or maybe once or twice a day.

The many faces of Anime

This is the collage I made using different Anime characters. I initially made this as a game for AnimeElites.com forums. I also posted this in our forums at Darkmoon. Unfortunately, the link to the game there was lost due to the recent upgrade of the forums, which screwed up the database.

A small take on Marvel Universe and Iron Man

Iron Man The Incredible Hulk

Last Wednesday (April 30) my girlfriend and I watched the Iron Man movie. We had to take the last full show because she gets off on her work late 6pm. The movie was well done, and so it the visual effects. It was, for the lack of better word, one of the best movies from Marvel Studios. And because it was the last show, I didn’t see the bonus clip after the end credits.

I’ve already knew the origins of Iron Man and many important characters surrounding him. That was because as early as the year 1990, I was already exposed to the stories of Marvel Universe. Going back to the movie, as I was watching, I carefully observed a lot of characters. And here is my take on some of the characters.

  • As Tony Stark arrived at the party during the first half of the film, there was an old guy surrounded by women near the entrance before going inside. He mistakenly greeted him as Hugh Hefner (founder of Playboy). The old guy was actually Stan Lee (creator of Marvel Comics). Stan Lee also had cameos in most Marvel-related films such as Spider-man 1,2,3, X-Men 1,3, Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic Four 1,2, and more.
  • In the film, after Tony Stark goes after the villain, James looked at another uncompleted armor in the basement created by Stark and said “Next time, baby…” Tony Stark’s closest friend, who appears to always nags him is James Rhodes. Most of you won’t ring any bells when hearing his name, but he appears a lot on the film. Why? because he is War Machine. The other armor of Tony Stark which was colored silver/black. Which, if rumors are true, will appear as a spin-off movie from Iron Man.
  • There was this agent-guy who keeps popping up and showing before Pepper and Stark. He said he was not in any of the local government agencies, and that their agency name was Strategic Homeland Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate. The name was too long that I didn’t mind it at first. Near the end, Pepper asked him for his help. And at the end of the movie, he finally said the shorter version of the name of their agency which was S.H.I.E.L.D. Ah ha! So its them, the popular agency group from Marvel that sometimes hire the world’s best heroes to combat threat.

With this movie, the other various known characters from Marvel Comics are appearing one by one in the films, which may eventually lead to another Marvel Studios film. Now if you’ve watched past the end credits you will see a bonus clip which shows Nick Fury (agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.) talking with Tony Stark.

“At the end of the credits, Stark comes home and finds Nick Fury in his living room -staring towards the window. He then turns to tell Stark he’s the not the only superhero in the world. Stark asks who he is, and Fury turns and says he’s “Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D, and I’m here to talk to you about The Avengers Initiative”. [Tambayan.ph]

Behind Nick Fury we can see various heroes from Marvel. On the left, top to bottom; Iron Man, Thor, and Luke Cage. And on the right; Daredevil, Nick Fury, and Spider-Man.
