Shaiya - Light and Darkness

It took me sometime to find the name where this wallpaper came from. I originally downloaded it from a wallpaper pack, but it doesn’t mention the name of this image.

Now I present to you Light and Darkness from the MMORPG world of Shaiya.

Life tips #8

And since I’m back, the tips and tricks from my starred items have accumulated again. I’ll have to clip this post with the MORE tag after 10 entries because it is going to be a long entry. Click the link at the bottom of the post (or click the post title) to see the rest of the entry. But if you are reading this in a RSS/Feed reader, then the whole post should show up.

And for the next series of Life tips, I’ll post the top (I consider) 10 tips, then post the rest after the jump. I’m doing this in an effort to minimalize this website, and to further speed up loading.

Unexpected downtime

My apologies for the, not really unexpected, downtime since last week for almost 5 days. I didn’t realized that this blog site will eventually reach its bandwidth quota for this month. I was planning to wait until May 1 so that the bandwidth will reset, but I just couldn’t live without my blog so I decided to purchase an additional increase in its bandwidth.

Most of you encountered this page for the past four days.

Bandwidth exceeded

So what really happened?

A two weeks before the downtime, I checked the stat analysis of this blog. I saw a sudden spike in the page loads, and that means more users are coming to the site. I also saw that the bandwidth meter is nearing towards its quota. Since there are only a few days before the bandwidth resets (every 1st day of the month), I figured the remaining bandwidth could handle the visitors. But I was wrong. The bandwidth capped last Thursday, as I was notified automatically by my host via email.

Stats for April 2008

According to the stats, my blog reached 112,817 page hits for this month and ate through my bandwidth.

The probable cause?

It was because of the Hana Kimi (Japan) & Hana Kimi (Taiwan) post. I wasn’t expecting that much visitors commenting and visiting that single the page. And I was really trying to avoid trolls and flaming on that topic.

How did I arrive to this conclusion?

Based on the stat screenshot above. The sudden spike started last March. That was when I posted the blog entry about Hana Kimi, it was posted on the 20th of March.

Solutions?

I upgraded my hosting plan so that I can get additional storage space and bandwidth. The bandwidth now is 2.5 times more than the previous one. And I also installed a cache plugin to reduce server load and multiple page requests that’s eating up my bandwidth.

Whew! Finally my blog is back (it wasn’t really gone).

Update: I just got my blog black and the comments have started appearing, yet again. Thanks to all those who visited and commented on the site. Just keep coming and commenting…

Belldandy figurine

As usual I’ve been busy with a lot of “extracurricular activities” that I have barely enough time to create a post here. And since I’m already going out, I’ll just post a quick one. Nothing special, I’m just showing you my Belldandy figurine I bought last year.

Belldandy figurine
She’s my angel and goddess.

Looking back on my previous entires, I have a lot of posts that I tagged Belldandy. A quick search for the keyword Belldandy reveals the posts I mentioned her. There was the desktop meme, the custom Belldandy theme of my computer, and of course her bio.

How to change shortcuts in the Windows save dialog box

I’ve been looking for this hack for quite sometime, its just that now I decided to end my search. I hope this post may help others who are looking for the same explorer modification.

It is always frustrating when you want to save an image or a document to a certain folder using the save dialog box when you have to navigate through various different folders. I usually save my photos to the My Photos default folder, some I save to the Tambayan image folder, and some at the Eternal image folder. Stuff that I downloaded are save initially at the My Received Files folder. I’m an organized freak when it comes to naming files and organizing folders on Windows explorer. It is because I always want to find something quickly.

Save dialog box

So here it is, the hack to change/modify the default shortcuts that you can see at the “save as” and “open” dialog box. I just did a quick rundown of the steps. But if you are too n00b to follow my instructions, you can view a step-by-step instructions at simplehelp.net.

Change open save dialog box

  1. At the START menu open the RUN box then type gpedit.msc then click Ok.
  2. GROUP POLICY will open, then navigate to this folder. User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Windows Explorer - Common Open File Dialog. Once there, double click Items Displayed in Places Bar located on the right panel.
  3. At the properties box, select Enable then add the folders you like to create shortcut to. Remember to input the full path to the folder.
  4. Hit Apply, then Ok to finish modifying.

At the screenshot above you may notice I used MyDocuments, MyPictures, MyMusic as a path to the folder. It is a “shell folder” for Windows explorer, and it knows where that folder is located in respect to the current user (for multiple users) that is logged in.

If you click on the Explain tab, it will show up this text.

Configures the list of items displayed in the Places Bar in the Windows File/Open dialog. If enable this setting you can specify from 1 to 5 items to be displayed in the Places Bar.

The valid items you may display in the Places Bar are:
1) Shortcuts to a local folders — (ex. C:\Windows)

3) Common Shell folders.

The list of Common Shell Folders that may be specified:
