Hana Kimi (Japan) & Hana Kimi (Taiwan)
So it’s true. Both versions of the series will be played on the same day at a local channel here in the Philippines. Starting March 24, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi / Japan) will be aired on GMA, while Hanazakarino Kimitachihe (Hana Kimi / Taiwan) is on ABS-CBN.
Both series are based on the Japanese manga Hana-Kimi by Hisaya Nakajo. Since both are based on the same story, the plot and characters are essentially the same. The only difference is how both drama portray the story, and of course their names. A rough English translation of the drama is “For You In Full Blossom”.
Hanazakarino Kimitachihe (Hana Kimi / Taiwan) runs in 15 90-minute episodes and is longer than the Japanese version. It was first shown in Taiwan in the late 2006. The three major characters are Lu Rui Xi (Ella Chen; based on Mizuki Ashiya), Zuo Yi Quan (Wu Chun; based on Izumi Sano), and Jin Xiu Yi (Jiro Wang; based on Shuichi Nakatsu).
I can’t comment on this one since I haven’t watched this version, yet. But my girlfriend told me that the leading man on this version is more “cuter” than the Japanese version. I told her that she is biased on the Korean/Chinese dramas. Or maybe “I am” the one who is biased on the Japanese one.
Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi / Japan) uses the exact name of the characters from the manga since it is originally from Japan. This series runs on 12 episodes, with 54 minute each, so it is shorter than the Taiwanese version. The 3 major cast are, the ever cute Horikita Maki as Ashiya Mizuki, Oguri Shun as Sano Izumi, and Ikuta Toma as Nakatsu Shuichi. This series aired in Japan on the 2nd-half of last year (2007).
This is one of the first few J-doramas (Japanese dramas) I’ve watched since last year and the second series I’ve actually recommended to my girlfriend (the other one was Liar Game). The show was full of humor and a little bit of drama. In the last few minutes of the last episode, expect heavy drama (^_^). I liked this series for two reasons; (1) because of the humor and wild antics of the cast, and (2) because of Horikita Maki (this is the first series I’ve known and seen her.)

i agree with your girlfriend taiwan lead male is cuter than oguri shun.. and the plot in each dramas are not the same.. the taiwan version is same as the manga… while the japanese version has alterations….
when you watch the taiwan version, the story was really amusing… but has a dissappointing end.. the last episode was good but seems to be unfinished.. its good if it has 2nd season…
while the japanese drama was a real comic one…
it was beautiful has less conflicts and most of all has a more satisfying end than the taiwan version..

That’s a good review. I haven’t watched the Taiwanese version yet so I don’t know which version is more favorable. Regardless, I vote for the Japanese one since I like the flow of the story and the characters (not comparing it to the Taiwanese version).
It also has been reported that there is a TV special episode that is being made for Hana Kimi Japan
TV Special of this drama will air sometime this year with the regular casts from the drama. Story starts off half a year after Mizuki’s secret of being a girl has revealed. It is near the valentine’s day, and Sano and Nakatsu are talking about the last week of Summer vacation. This is when the story gets back to the last week of Summer holidays, which is between episode 7 and 8. The shooting started on March 19, 2008. [wiki]

i just finished watching the two versions.. Like most people commented, The taiwanese version has a rather disappointing end- they could have at least made it a bit romantic, it has less spice but the flow of the story is good. The Jap version has a good ending that’ll make you teary-eyed!! And the story is funny! Talk about characters, of course the guys in taiwan are much cuter especially their Yi Quan(Sano), but Ashiya in Japanese is much prettier and more feminine looking than their Rei Xie(Ashiya) in taiwan, who rather was convincing because of her manly appearance and acting… But both are good though…
To sum it all, the Jap has a good ending and the Taiwan has a good story flow…. But everyone has his or her own observations and comments, so if one wants to really know which is good, I suggest to watch both.. Not only you’ll enjoy but you’ll also learn a lot of things…
Well, hello to everyone…i think the taiwan version is better than the japanese b’coz they follow the flow of the story in the manga, plus more cuter characters like Wu Zhun…(wahehe) than the japanese. The setting in taiwan ver. is so cooooooool, and i love yujiiro (dog) hahaha..(^_^),

hi! I liked taiwan version it’s story flow good. And I think jpn. different from taiwan anyway they all are good story depend on how to see. For Me I like REI XI cause she’s so friendly and innocence.

I’d better find a copy of the Taiwanese version since a lot of you are commenting how good it is. I just don’t want to make a comparison about the two because I’m really more into Japanese dramas.

Yung gumanap na Izumi Sano sa Hana Kimi (Japan) ay isa sa myembro ng grupong F4 sa Hana Yori Dango. Kaya lang sabi ng gf ko mas may itsura daw talaga yung sa Taiwanese version kung ikukumpara silang dalawa sa itsura.
Kung ako naman tatanungin mas gusto ko kase makita si Horikita Maki (Ashiya Mizuki) kase cute siya. Hehe.
Isa pa maraming Japanese drama na rin kasi siya lumabas at napanood ko na tulad ng Nobuta Wo Produce (2005) at Kurosagi (2006).

I love the taiwan version. No moment was dull it was funny and yet romantic. I like the chemistry of the main lead. Plus ang gagaling nung mga supporting actors, they shine on their own character. I keep on laughing and feel so kilig. I love it!!!!!

I’ve only watched at least two episodes of the Taiwan version on ABS-CBN, and like what most of you said, I have to agree that it contains more humor than the Japanese version. The story and acting is good. And because it is dubbed by ABS-CBN, the timing of the audio and the voices is almost perfect. I’m going to finish it if time allows.
But still I like the Japanese version because I like its humor/drama combination better. I don’t like the local dubbed version because I usually watch J-doramas in its original Japanese language. And besides, I’ve already watched the whole Japanese version three times last year.
the taiwan version is really nice and funny, also the characters are cute. i really liked jiro coz he’s the one making me laugh.

Hi! Like you I’m more a fan of Japanese Dramas more than any other Asian dramas simply because the stories are more interesting and entertaining, not to mention less problematic.
I watched Hana Kimi Japan before (right after each episode was aired in Japan and uploaded online) and was totally hooked. I loved the series. The casting was perfect, especially with Ikuta Toma as Nakatsu. He was just really funny and he made the already lovable Nakatsu even more lovable. Even Nanba sempai was hilarious.
As for Hana Kimi Taiwan, I didn’t even bother watching it before because I thought that the actors didn’t fit the characters well enough. However, after finding out that they’ll be airing it on ABS-CBN, I decided to have a look and I must admit, I have grown to like it. Ella actually turned out to be a great choice for Ashiya Mizuki. She captured the Ashiya I imagined while reading the manga perfectly. Horikita Maki did great as Ashiya, but she was too pretty, so I guess Ella fits the character better.
So I think its really hard choose one over the other because on one hand you have the Taiwan version with the perfect Ashiya and a very faithful interpretation of the manga, which I loved reading. But on the other hand, you have the Japanese version with a Nakatsu thats much better than the original manga, a very beautiful male cast (just look at Oguri Shun and Shirota Yu), and changes from the manga that boosted the series’ comedy and made it more interesting, especially for someone who already knows the story.

I have seen both versions, and I will try to be objective:
The Japanese version has a tighter storyline, and Izume Sano’s reason for his withdrawal from the sport he is known for has deeper undertones, i.e. his ambivalence towards his father, his inability to deal with the burden of expectations, etc. Also, the whole focus of the show is how the Ashiya Mizuki drew out Izumi Sano from the shell he has created and made him want to jump again. This storyline was sustained right to the very end, while the love story angle between Sano and Mizuki was downplayed in favor of Nakatsu’s gender confusion.
Alternating with the 2 main conflicts (Sano’s return to high jump, and Nakutsu’s sexual confusion) are the different issues that come up, all of them bearing the possible switch that might reveal Mizuki’s true identity, like that story of the panty thief where the female students of Saint Blossoms demand for a thorough search of the Osaka dormitories to seek out the thief that had been stealing their underwears. A search is made and sure enough, Mizuki’s personal luggage yields a pair of very feminine, flower printed undies. In the end, Mizuki is simply labeled a pervert who has a thing for feminine underwear, and the dog Yugiro is identified as the panty thief.
A priceless scene has Nikatsu dancing a happy dance while wearing female underwear on his head.
Also, there are several highlight scenes in the Japanese version that were simply too good to miss, like that scene where Mizaki endured a wounded foot just to finish a race on the wager that if she wins it then Sano must consider returning to high jump. That scene alone is a good study in levels and composition and easily became my favorite. Another is that episode towards the end where Izumi Sano finally makes the jump. This resolves not only Mizuki’s quest but Sano’s relationship issue with his father and younger brother.
There was one scene, however, that I found irritating. Towards the end, the school holds some sort of dance competition and Nakatsu and Mizuki ends up as partners. They did a waltz to the tune of Amazing Grace, and that really fell apart for me.
The Taiwanese version, on the otherhand, faithfully followed the Manga text, and this did not work to any advantage because the pacing was compromised. Everything played out in normal soap fashion that when the comedy kicked in, it merely passed through like a slice of life, the way they do in real life, which defeats the idea of focus. In this version, the issue of Ji Quan’s return to high jump is resolved early in the show so there was not much to explore towards the end but the love story blossoming between Ji Quan (Sano) and Rui Xi (Mizuki). For most part, the whole show had no other focus but on the possibility of Rui Xi being found out. After a while it got to be tiring. What did save the whole show was Xui Yi (Nakatsu) who really brought everything down to a screeching halt with his ecstatic misery. Unlike the Japanese version where Nakatsu, towards the end, found out that Mizuki is really a girl, this character never did find out that Rui Yi is truly feamle, so he had merely treats his sexual confusion as a phase.
Admittedly, Ji Quan (Wu Chu) is a visual treat. He looks good enough to eat with a dessert spoon. But the material he worked on was too thin and that really was a waste. Oguri Shun, on the other hand, showed that he is matured enough as an actor to play a trully emotionally wounded character. But he did looked a bit old at some angle.
Ella Chen was a bit chubby at the start of the Taiwanese version, and that looked a bit awkward at first. However, she did have a good start chewing her character. Towards the middle of the show’s run, however, she fell into the trap of getting by on making goofy faces. That’s when the magic ended, I think: when her character was left with nothing more to deliver but goofy faces.
Although Maki Horikita did not resort to making goofy faces, she did fall into sort of the same trap with her stone-faced reactions. Kudos to the editors who managed to cut those painful reactions short. Also, she looked too feminine with her painfully small frame. It would have helped if she had sported a shorter hairstyle for the show.
There were scene in the Japanese version that treated the audience like they were stupid dorks: like in that talent show scene where Mizuki’s classmates connived to have her walk out on the stage buck naked. The gay school doctor managed to save her by having her come on stage dressed as a princess. When she came out looking beautiful in her lavander gown, THERE’S NO WAY ANYONE CAN SUSTAIN THE ILLUSION THAT MIZUKI IS JUST A BEAUTIFUL BOY! That’s a proud C Cup Breast staring at everyone, or were everyone too spaced out to notice?
Overall, the Japanese version had the advantage of improving on the Taiwanese version. But the Taiwanese version is such a visual treat that one asks if anyone cares if there’s not much of a story in there.

Also, last I checked, rating from March 25 to 27 shows that Hana Kimi Taiwan posted an impressive 12.9% and was ranked as number 9 in the daytime ranking of shows on March 25 (Tuesday), while Hana Kimi Japan ranked 10 with an impressive 18.3% for primetime ranking for the same day.
For March 26, Hana Kimi Taiwan failed to sustain its rank in the daytime shows while Hana Kimi Japan held its own at rank ten for primetime shows with 16.3%
For March 27, both versions dropped out of the top ten in their respective categories.
Bakit, ika n’yo?
People decided to just buy the pirated versions of both the Taiwan and the Japanese versions. I asked my suking tindera ng pirated DVDs and sure enough, March 27 reflects that there was a noticeable increase in the sales of both the Taiwanese and the Japanese DVD of Hanazakiri No Kimitachihe. This way, they need not bother with commercials interrupting their viewing pleasure.
Dahan dahan lang. Producers might wisen up and haul everyone one of us into jail.

I love Hana Kimi Japanese version. I mean, it’s an adaptation of a Japanese manga for crying out loud. The Japanese version has delivered well simply because it’s their thing. It involves their culture and other things that make them uniquely Japanese. I can’t seem to find other arguments from the Taiwanese version except that the actors are, to borrow Clarence’s term, a “visual treat.” That and nothing else. I guess if you’re not really that familiar with jdorama, then it’s just a matter of the Taiwanese version having “cuter” guys than the Japanese version. Actually, one thing I love about Japanese series is that they’re not afraid to cast ordinary-looking guys into important roles. Later on, you will know that these guys are good, because they will grow on you. You will love the roles that they portray, simply because the actors have done justice to it. The Japanese ensemble of Hana Kimi are not just pretty faces, they have good chemistry and they were able to deliver well.
The reviews that I did of the two versions were based solely on the DVDs that I watched, and not on the productions being broadcasted by the two Philippine networks.
I watched the Taiwan version a year ago, and the Japanese version about three months ago. I wrote this review after I have watched both versions in full.
I hope the reactionaries here realizes that both ABS-CBN and GMA7 are merely broadcasting shows that they bought from foreign producers, respectively Taiwan and Japan. Neither ABS-CBN nor GMA7 has anything to do with the actual production,i.e. selection of cast, writing of script, and taping of episodes, of Hanazakari No Kimitachihe, so the two versions has nothing to do with the ongoing network war!
i have already watched the taiwan version and at first i really like the series because the leading man is so cute!!! but when i started to watch the japanese version, i agreed with my friend opinion that it’s much better than the taiwan. the story is really fascianting and i like the character of Ikuta Toma!!!..im totally hook with the story.. if only i dont have a class the next day i probably can finish it in just one whole night. ^_^

you really shouldn’t judge how the both main character looks like…i admit ashiya mizuki of Japanese ver. is much prettier and feminine looking than ashiya of Taiwan….in the Taiwan ver…ashiya/reixi is much hated and troublesome while ashiya of Japanese ver. is really really loved by her classmates…she is really closed by all of the person there….
at some point the sano of taiwan is much like a looser before (yup no offend to those who like him) it’s just like tsamba lng ung pagkapanalo nya noon while sano in japan. ver. stopped because of the high expectations to him…
anyways we should not judge the looks of the main characters but their acting…

@Iris, the guy who played Nakatsu in the Japanese version was truly hilarious. He was especially effective in that scene where he was doing happy dance with a female underwear over his head, singing “I Am Not Gay!”
The guy who played Xui Yi (Nakatsu) in the Taiwanese version was equally hilarious. I loved it when he suddenly declared for everyone to hear that he is coming out of the closet because he loves Rui Xi (Mizuki). That was a barrel of laugh! It could be just me, but at some angles I swear he looks a bit like Paolo Ballesteros.
In fact, I loved both actors doing the same role. The two should get together in a comedy movie, and the language must be Tagalog, of course.
@Maria, the Taiwanese version is actually faithful to the Japanese Manga, and that’s why it bombed.
All reading materials that are being lifted into action performance (Anime or with Live Actors performing) must adapt to the fast pace of the medium. What happened with the Taiwanese version was that it failed to adapt to the fast pace of the medium, so na-retain ‘yung pace na para kang nagbabasa ng manga.
The real advantage of the Japanese version over the Taiwanese version is that it was produced a year after the Taiwanese version ended. So, na-identify na nila ang lahat ng kahinaan ng Taiwanese version. That’s why the japanese version is noticeably fast paced, and all the dramatic scenes were properly highlighted.
@Janeffer, well totoo, hindi masyado ang kilig factor ng Japanese version dahil hindi iyun ang focus ng version nila kundi ‘yung quest ni Mizuki na hikayatin ulit si Sano na bumalik sa high jump competition. Kaya nga darker o mas malalim ang treatment ng Japanese version duon sa istorya ni Sano, at na-resolved lang ito sa mga final episodes na ng series. Compared sa Taiwan version na kalahatian pa lang ng series eh na-resolved na ‘yung takot ni Ji Quan kaya sa mga sumunod na episodes eh manipis na ang kwento dahil naka-focus na lang sa love story nila ni Rui Xi at sa sexual confusion ni Xui Yi.
As for Hana Kimi Taiwan 2, parang ang plano na lang yata eh two hour special na magfo-focus na lang sa confession nila Rui Xi at Ji Quan sa isa’t-isa that they love each other, at finally malalaman na ni Rui Xi na matagal nang alam ni Ji Quan na babae siya.
Just in-case na hindi mo pa alam ang buong kwento ng Hana Kimi Taiwan, magbabakasyon ang barkadahan nila Rui Xi, Ji Quan and others sa resort na pagmamay-ari ng ina ng Leader ng Dorm 2 (Can’t remember his name.) Dito may makakaalam na babae si Rui Xi tapos ia-attempt niyang i-rape si Rui Xi. Matataranta si Rui Xi at magtatatakbo at mawawala sa kagubatan, kung saan eh susundan siya ni Ji Quan.
Magkakaroon ng minor accident, tapos magdedeliryo si Rui Xi dahil sa mataas na lagnat. Para hindi siya magdehydrate, mapipilitan si Ji Quan na i-oral hydrate si Rui Xi. Ang siste, ayaw tanggapin ng lalamunan ni Rui Xi ang tubig, so ang gagawin ni Ji Quan eh iipunin muna niya ang tubig sa bibig niya, tapos saka niya ito ipapasa sa bibig ni Rui Xi, using his own breath to force the water in.
Eh nagdedeliryo nga ang babae, so nauwi sa mainit na… he he he
I heard that a 2 hour special is also on the works for Hana Kimi Japan. This will focus on Izumi Sano’s journey to California where he will reunite with Mizuki. Tapos, it is here where he will get a sports scholarship to enter UC Berkeley. Dito rin niya malalaman na Ashiya Mizuki is really a competitive track and field athlete. Ang problema, dito rin yata mare-reunite si Izumi Sano sa kanyang previous girlfriend (a girl that was identified in the Manga.) So basically, the story will also focus on the love story triangle between Mizuki, Sano and the other girl.

Yup, I just finished it last week, along with the other pending J-doramas I need to watch (still watching #6 & #7 from the list).
Matsumoto Jun is quite funny on this one. The show is full of comedy, a little bit of drama, lots of pasta, and lots more of broken plates. Hehe. But I have to admit you’ll get tired of hearing him say sumimasen for the nth time.
About the special episode of Hana Kimi Japan, it started shooting just last month. Don’t know yet if it is finished. But I can’t wait to see it.
I’m also waiting for the special episode of Nodame Cantabile and Proposal Daisakusen, because both series’s ending is so bitin.

And if you like Matsumoto Jun, you should also watch Kimi wa Petto (You’re my pet), but it’s a little bit heavy on the drama.

@Rayman and Carla. Matsumoto Jun did this series where he fell in-love with his younger sister. The title is Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru. It’s really a very dark story. I saw a copy of it at my friends’ house and I’m manuvering to steal; it vewy vewy soon!
For me I love the taiwan version!^^ and I was really thankful that ABS-CBN pick out the Taiwan version^^
though the ending leave me completely hanging i still love it! =3 and I do agree on others saying that there should be a 2nd season cuz since then it was just so good ands amazing….!
about the characters…I do prefer taiwan version they are all cute and handsome! Ella was so pretty, cute and very enthusiastic I really enjoy her lot! I prefer her and would vote her the best than the girl in the japan version… and Wu Chun is so handsome and very hot compared to the guy in the japan version (hey no offense to those who lyk the japan version)

its not that because people who keeps on loving the taiwanese version were kapamilyas ,.. its just were already in love with the story, the characters and the dubbing and timing of voices.. i love’em too..
-Jap’s version has a pretty lead girl cast but i dont think that it fits to her because she wasn’t so realistic to play the role by the fact that she obviously really does look like a girl. [Better play another role that plays girly xP]
-The Taiwan’s lead girl plays it better and makes it more realistic and at the same time brings glow and makes the show funnier.. [haha] though she’s not that pretty but she has a lot of cuteness in her; personality, her acting ang gestures. [that makes us love the show even more].
and oh Wu Chun is hot and so is the “golden right foot” [haha]

I have to agree that ABS dubbing is far better than GMA. But since I’ve watched the Japanese version and its original voices, my vote is still on the Japan version. If you watched the Taiwan version on its original voices, I have to admit, it is still funny.
On the lighter side, the Taiwan version is funnier than its counterpart (facial expressions and acting). And truth to tell, the Taiwanese version story is directly based on the original Japanese manga (comics) of the same title. Thus it brought the show both an advantage and a disadvantage. Advantage because it stays true to the original Hana Kimi story. And since it is directly based on the original story, it didn’t have too much variation in its plot line, and thus it became one of its disadvantages.
The variation of why some like the other version better is that maybe because we (Filipinos/Filipinas) are accustomed to how an Asian series is dubbed and interpreted locally. The acceptance of a certain series, whether its Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, or Japanese depends on how a viewer is ‘entertained’ by its actors, language, script, and scenes. If you watch both the series on its original form (not dubbed locally), there is a chance that you may or may not like it, or both.
When you get into J-doramas (Japanese dramas), you will start to notice the way Japanese dramas are made and how their actors and actresses act. How they portray comedy, drama, horror, and other entertainment genres. I can still remember the first time I watched a J-dorama (original Japanese language), I wasn’t hooked on it yet. But after watching a couple of more series, I started to get the feel of how they portray a certain character in the story.
I have to admit that if I’ve watched Hana Kimi (Japan) on local TV (dubbed) first, I would only give it a rating of 4/10. Why? because of the dubbing, the clip cuts, and some heavy drama scenes. But since I’ve already watched and finished the original Japanese version last year, I can give it a rating of 8.5/10. It is because I’ve already adapted to the Japanese style of talking, acting, and scenes. And that .5 is because Maki tops my kawaii list.
On the Taiwan version, after I watched both the original Taiwanese language version and the local dubbed one. I can rate the series by 7.5/10. On its original form, it is a series that can put a smile on my face. And if by chance the series ended up on GMA (and they are the one who dubbed it), the series wouldn’t have gotten worse.

well i think for the jap version the reason behind it to be different from the manga because hana kimi was a known manga in japan, i guess they want a more exciting and new episode. and the actor that played nakatsu is awesome ( i love him lol )
the tai version on the other hand follow the manga flow, well its really great seing it live. but what i hate on the tai is the main characters well it just that she’s kinda not qualified for the role it looks like OA. no its OA na! still nakatsu character is superb i guess its ok.

honestly…. i like the taiwanese version even though it had a not so good ending but i like it. Ella Chen played a good role of disguising as a guy, infact he really look like a guy and i wont mistaken her as a girl. but his role hir in hana kimi is just like his role in hana yori dango… no new transformation… hehe unlike in gokusen where he played the role of a “naughty guy”. I really like the movie.
