Chicksilog, my take and how it came to be

It was when the first successful MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) hit the Philippines. Gamers (not all) from all over the country was hooked to this gaming phenomenon. It was Ragnarok Online, which was called pRO (Philippine Ragnarok Online) locally, that changed the “offline” gaming community to switch online. It was also the game many female got into gaming in the first place. The online game, that was dominated by male players, now has almost equal female players. And now with our Internet connection getting faster and cheaper, online games are now more accessible to most Filipinos.

But how did the term Chicksilog came to be? I don’t know which came first the chicken or the egg. Actually, even I didn’t know where the term started first. Is it in the game itself, or because of our very own local band Kamikazee?

But what is Chicksilog? Chicksilog is a female character in-game, played, used, and controlled by a male in real life (not to be confused with male piloting a female character). “Chicks-” meaning female as chicks, and “-ilog” meaning itlog (egg in Tagalog). Or in a straightforward way of defining it, chick na may itlog (chick with an egg). The international online gaming community also has another term for that, somewhat jokingly, is MMORPG or Many Men/Males Online Role Playing (as) Girls.

Now with the term out of the way, I will share to you how did I managed to create a Chicksilog character. And eventually adapting it to other online games.

Back when I was still active in pRO, I was using a male character (I’ll tell you my pRO days story on another post). Anyway I tried to get my girlfriend, Joanne, to play the game. So I created an account for her using a female character (of course). Her first character was an Acolyte, and eventually leveling up to become a Priestess. She played occasionally, and enjoyed the game. But as time passed, I began to use her character. I was initially a pilot to her Acolyte, but eventually began to use her character more than I use my own. Since she owned the account and character, when an in-game player asked me if I’m a female I always answered yes. I also began adapting a female personality so that I won’t get “caught” in-game as a male using a female character. So when my girlfriend actually use her character, she will still refer to herself as a female in-game, since the game also stores your online friends in a sort of in-game messenger.

A year has passed, I was using both my (male) account and my girlfriend’s (female) account. Soon afterwards I transfered to another server to start over. But this time adopting the Chicksilog style of playing. I created my characters as females, an Acolyte (to Priestess), a Thief (to Rouge), and my pen-ultimate character a Merchant (to Alchemist, to a Biochemist). Here is a screenshot of my most powerful character in pRO. A level 99 second-class AB (Acid Bomb) Biochemist with her pet a level 99 Vanilmirth. Level 99 characters always have an aura beneath their feet.

Biochemist level 99 with Vanilmirth

My Biochemist, named after my girlfriend Joanne, is wearing a Jewel Crown as a headpiece. Dark Blinkers covering her eyes, and a Romantic Flower in her mouth. Sporting Lord’s Clothes and Angelic Hood, plus the Shoes of Undead Slayer. And as weapons, the sword Fireblend and a Bucklet of Counter Attack. Oh and she is an Acid Bomber type of Biochemist. (Non Ragnarok players may not know what I’m talking about here)

After more than 3 years of playing pRO, I decided to try out other online games. R.O.S.E. Online (distributed locally by Level-Up Games, the same with pRO) caught my fancy and need for gaming, locally called pROSE. My first character is a male Hawker, but as you’ve probably guessed, it didn’t lasted long. I created a female character, this time a Muse (leveling up to become an offensive type Mage that has healing powers, hehe) as my main character. I played for a couple of months before quiting the game since I was already becoming busy with other things. I couldn’t post my screenies because I lost my copy (I can’t find it in my backup CDs). That was my second stint on using a Chicksilog character.

My third, and currently active playing character online, can be found dancing at Audition: Dance Battle Online (AU for short, or Audition Online). I started at Audition Philippines (distributed by E-Games Philippines) with a male character and eventually abandoning him in exchange for a female character. My reason? because of her cuteness. Haha.

Basic female character at AU

This is not my actual get-up when I go to the dance floor, well I changed the clothes to hide protect her identity. She is known as a female in real life, and she even has her own Friendster (a female) account. Having a blue Mid Parting hairstyle and the basic Girl Face, for a head. Wearing a light pink Sleeveless T-shirt and a School Girl style mini-skirt plus a Sneakers for footwear. This is my basic newbie-look get-up.

So that’s it, my Chicksilog characters. You are probably wondering why there are men, guys, males, or whatever you may call “US” that likes to use a female character (avatars) in-game. What are our reasons? What are our agendas? Well I can summarize a few reasons, mostly my own and some other Chicksilogs I encounter in-game.

1. A female character “visually” appears as a non-threatening character or some would say weaker looking than males. Some use this to their advantage as males usually lower their guards down on a female character. That is until they come to a PVP (Player vs Player) match, and the male avatar gets PAWNED by a female avatar.
2. Males usually use a female avatar in-game to pick-up chicks. As female is more open and converse easily with other females, this is the first step in asking their Friendster account.
3. My favorite. Most female avatars are more cuter than males. Yes most of them are totally KAWAII!!! I like my character cute, don’t you?
4. Female avatars are also used to expand friends and relations. Since female avatars are more often “chatted” with both the male and female avatars.
5. Another thing to note is that female avatars are less likely to be bad-mouthed by other players.

Whatever the reason, or purpose, why many men uses a female avatar in-game it’s just mostly for fun and the enjoyment of the game. Sometimes to have a variance in playing the game, since most are already fed-up using their male avatars and just want to try the other side. As for me, female avatars are more cuter the males. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a straight guy last time I checked, its just that I like cute avatars. Haha.

BTW, here is the lyrics of the song Chicksilog, popularized by Kamikazee as a soundtrack of the Philippine Ragnarok Online. As you can see from the lyrics, a Chicksilog is using a Swordsman class female avatar named Maldita. Also for the non-pRO gamers, Prontera is a place in-game. It is the place where most people hang out or congregate.

Chicksilog by Kamikazee

Magdamag nag-aabang maglalaro kaya

Natalo nga sila at nagyaya kang magsaya
Tanging hinihintay, ang makita ka

Alas dos nung linggo (sa Gotesco)
Nag polo pa ako (at nagpabango)
Nananabik habang (hinahanap ka)
Tumigil ang mundo (nang makita ka)

Chicksilog
Ako ay nahulog
Nilinlang, niloko
Alam ko nang siikreto mo
Chicksilog
Ako ay nahulog
Nilinlang, niloko
Alam ko nang siikreto mo

Walang saysay mag-level up pantasya ay nasira na
Ang inipong lakas, naglahong parang bula
Kaya pala… ang husay mo sa espada
Si Maldita, ay lalake pala

Alas dos nung linggo (sa Gotesco)
Nag polo pa ako (at nagpabango)
Nananabik habang (hinahanap ka)
Tumigil ang mundo (nang makita ka)

Chicksilog
Ako ay nahulog
Nilinlang, niloko
Alam ko nang siikreto mo
Chicksilog
Ako ay nahulog
Nilinlang, niloko
Alam ko nang siikreto mo

Anime Terms

I’ve already posted the different classifications and types of Animes here. Now I’m going to post some common Anime terms for those who are not into the Anime-mania.

Anime (anything animated). These days, usually means specifically Japanese animation, however the word “anime” itself means any sort of cartoon in Japanese.

Aniparo (Anime parody). Refers to a genre in either anime or manga where known characters and stories are used in humorous situations.

BGM. Background Music.

Bishounen (”beautiful young man”). This term is very rarely used outside of anime. While it literally means “beautiful young man,” it has the same somewhat negative connotations as “prettyboy” in English. “Bishounen” is usually only applied to very feminine, swishy male anime characters.

Bishoujo (”beautiful girl”). More commonly heard outside of anime than bishounen, but still rare. Does not have the same negative connotations as bishounen.

Chibi. “Chibi” literally means “midget” and refers to anything small and cute. In anime, “chibi” refers to the super-deformed style of drawing. Characters with huge heads and itty bitty little bodies.

Cosplay Short for “costume play”. Dressing up as your favorite characters.

CG. Computer Graphics, or referring to anything in anime that is drawn digitally with 3D models.

Dub / Dubbed. If an anime is referred to as “dubbed”, it means the original Japanese voices were recorded over with another langauge voice, usually English.

Dojinshi. Literal meaning: same things, different people. Fan produced items from similar story lines, especially fan drawn manga. Dojinshi is pretty much legal in Japan as it shows the makers of official manga how popular their work is. Fan works range from hand-made photocopies stapled together into booklets to the professionally bound works.

Ecchi. “Ecchi” is the Japanese pronunciation of the English letter “H”, which in turn stands for “hentai”. It means anything perverted, overly sexual, etc. Always in a negative context.

Fan service. Anything used to please the audience that has nothing to do with the show. In anime, this is a “code word” for things like panty shots, close up of busts, etc. usually when the audience is predominately male.

Fansub (Fan-subtitled). The only way to find a translation of many less popular titles as well as surprising ones is through fansubbing. Generally, fansubbed items are distributed by copying freely, so poor quality copies are common. It is considered unethical and illegal to fansub a show which is being commercially translated.

Hentai. Refers to anything perverted, erotic, or sexual, always in a negative context. Words both as an adjective and a noun. Something can be described as “hentai,” and you can also simply call someone a “hentai.” Means the same as “ecchi”

Hime (princess). This is a name suffix, added to the ends of names. (Ex: Mononokehime = Princess Mononoke). If used alone as a noun, not attached to a name, the term is usually “himesama” or “ohimesama.”

Henshin (To transform). This term generally refers to animes or manga that has characters transforming into their magical alter ego.

Image Album. Albums for popular manga in Japan. Yes, popular manga/comics come with their own soundtracks. “Image” is used in Japanese the same way as “theme” is used in English, for character theme songs, etc

J-Pop. Japanese popular music.

Japanimation. A term used to refer to Japanese animation

Kawaii (”cute”). Literally, “kawaii” means defenseless/pathetic, but these days refers to anything dripping of cuteness. Also used for “cute” as in “cute girl/boy.” It is common for American anime fans to overuse this word. If you are male, please realize that this makes you sound comically swishy.

Kodomo. Literally means child. In the anime world, this term refers to anime or manga that is specifically created with children under the age of 10 in mind. Some popular kodomo anime titles are Doraemon and Anpanman.

Lemon (mature content). This is not a Japanese term. It is a word invented by American anime fans to refer to anime and fan fiction with sexual content.

Lolita. A term used for hentai involving children. Lolita comes from the book Lolita in which a forty some year old man falls in love with a fourteen year old girl. Lolita hentai is popular among men in Japan.

Lime. Usually refers to fanfic that hints that a couple had sex.

Manga (Japanese comics). As of 1998, over 54% of all bound printed matter published in Japan was manga, with nearly 2.8 billion volumes printed annually. Manga is much more popular than anime in Japan. Almost all anime starts as manga, gains a following, and is then converted to anime. Note that “manga” is printed, “anime” is animated. The two terms cannot be interchanged.

Mecha (Big robots in anime). This is not a Japanese term. It was invented originally by American anime fans to describe the big robots found in anime. Ironically, the term has caught on in Japan, and now some anime actually uses the term as well.

Megami-sama (a goddess). “Megami” literally means “female god.” “Sama” is an honorary suffix usually attached to the end

Manga-ka. A term used for a manga artist. Manga-ka is a difficult and much desired job in Japan unlike comic artists.

Mahou Shoujo. Literally means “magical girl.” This term is used to describe shows like Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura.

OAV. Stands for original animation video. Not part of a tv series, but not a movie.

Otaku (”obsessive fan”). This is a dangerous word. It has been adopted by American anime fans to mean any sort of anime/manga fan. Some even use it with pride. Note that in Japan, “otaku” is a very very harsh insult. It is reserved only for people who never leave their houses (which is what otaku literally means), because they are too frightened of people. No hygeine, no people skills, no motivation, and usually very perverted and disgusting. Use with great care outside of America.

OST Original SoundTrack - Soundtrack albums for the music in anime series.

OVA. A long, made for TV version of an anime series, usually 1-2 hours long. Occasionally seen on television, but usually released straight to video or DVD.

Omake. This term means “extra” in Japanese. In anime terms it usually refers to the silly stories, author notes, and alternative scenes found at the end of an anime series or manga.

Romanji (Also known as Roomaaji). The way in which Japanese pronunciations are written out using roman characters as it is done in English.

Regional Codes. A general DVD term, Regional Codes can be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending on the geographical area it is played in. These codes were placed after various studios and home video companies supported these codes as a required part of current DVD standards. In doing so, they hoped to better control how DVD titles were exported to other countries. Regional codes can usually be found on the back of DVD packages inside the Regional Coding globe logo with the region number on it. In some cases, the Regional Code is spelled out.

The following is the regional breakdown.
Region 1 (R1) - The United States, United States territories, and Canada
Region 2 (R2) - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, and Greenland
Region 3 (R3) - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Hong Kong
Region 4 (R4) - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean
Region 5 (R5) - Russia, Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia
Region 6 (R6) - China

Raw. In the anime world, “raw” is the common term used for unsubbed anime.

Shounen (Young man). This term is usually used to describe something targeted at young boys. It is generally adventure or action based.

Sub. When referring to an anime that is “Subbed”. It means that the original Japanese voices are still intact and another language translation is added in subtitles, usually English. [Subtitles are little text translations at the bottom of a show/movie]

Seiyuu. The Japanese voice actors/actresses in anime. This may include singers.

Super Deformed. Also known as Chibi, a style of drawing that makes the character’s heads really big in proportion to their bodies. A style commonly used for a funny or parody scene.

Shoujo (Girl). Shoujo anime and manga are generally created with a female audience in mind. Examples include Sailor Moon and Magic Knights Rayearth.

Shounen-ai (Boy love). This term refers to anime or manga that deals with relationships between two male characters. It is generally thought of as being less explicit than yaoi. Examples may include Gravitation or Yami no Matsuei.

Seme. In a single gender relationship, this term refers to the dominant partner or the one playing the male role often found in yaoi.

Uke. In a gay or lesbian relationship, this term refers to the “sub” or “female” role played by one of the partners. This term generally shows up in yaoi animes.

Yaoi. Any content that has boy-boy situations. Homosexual content.

Yuri (Literal meaning: lily). In the anime world, this term is the equivalent of yaoi but for girls. In other words, it refers to anime/manga with girl-girl situations.

The better network

Last Saturday and Sunday, I was at Bicol to attend a two-day family reunion with my mom. But I will not talk about the reunion just yet, I’ll save it for another time. What I want to rant today is our local mobile networks.

Back in the late 90’s, with the introduction of the SMS feature of the cellphone, two major companies fought the mobile wars. Smart Communications owned by the largest telecommunication company in the Philippines which is PLDT, and Globe Telecom owned by the wealthy Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecommunications. Also lets not forget the other mobile networks such as Mobiline and Islacom, which has a small number of subscribers. Back then, even before the age of SMS, Smart has already launched numerous cellphones out into the market. Remember the Smart BillCrusher prepaid card?

Anyway, I was still in first year college at that time, even before getting my first mobile phone I’ve already chosen my network, which was Smart Communications. I even got my first mobile phone in a Smart kiosk at SM City Fairview which was a Nokia 3210 (which was brand new at that time, pricing at 10k pesos). I chose Smart because of its network capabilities, where every Christmas and New Year brings tons of heavy traffic to the networks, Smart pulled through. I can text my friends and relatives without the worry of a clogged network, that was plaguing Globe Telecom at that time.

Most, if not all of my friends used Smart as their network. Another “bug” that appeared in Smart was the free call and text. That was another reason to use Smart, since by exploiting this bug we can call for long minutes or text for free. In short, I’m a Smart loyalist since getting my first mobile phone, that is until a few months ago.

I bought a Globe SIM (a few months after I bought my Sun SIM) just so I can use its UNLITXT service. This is the “only” reason, back then, to use Globe and also Sun Cellular. But soon I found out another advantage with this network, their network reach.

Last April I went to Palawan, with my cousins, for a 3 day vacation. I brought my 3 mobile phones, each with different SIM cards, Smart, Globe, and Sun. As soon as the plane landed at Palawan, I already knew Sun lost its signal. So as our tour of the islands started, I only carried my 2 phones. The signal was, at most moderate, but what was more noticeable was the signal of Globe which was stronger even if we went from one island to the next. On our next day, we traveled more than 2 hours to the site where we took a boat ride to the Underground River. On that trip I decided to bring only my Globe powered mobile phone and a digital camera. Good thing I left my Smart phone, coz half-way to the port going to the Underground River, Smart lost its signal. I knew that because my aunt was using Smart. My advice when you visit the Underground River at Palawan, bring only your Globe.

Last weekend, I was at Naga City in Bicol. Both mobile networks have strong signal there since that town is already a city, and it is mostly commercialized. But I didn’t spend my 2-day vacation there, but at Goa which is a 1 hour drive from the city. The house, where I was staying is nearer to the cell site of Smart, whereas the Globe cell site was a couple of blocks away. But get this, I need to go out of the house just to use my Smart powered mobile phone. I don’t know why Smart’s signal was weaker than Globe, when its cell site is a lot nearer to my location. Globe was running 2 to 3 (out of 7) bars of signal when I was still inside the house.

Now after using a Smart SIM for more than 7 years, I’ll probably switch to Globe. Which has a stronger signal and wider coverage area. Although I’ve used Smart international roaming when I was at Hong Kong, which performed extremely well when I texted back here in the Philippines. But they say, Globe also performs well on the international arena for mobile networks, which I have yet to test it out.

So if you are planning to visit the provinces here in the Philippines or just island hopping, use Globe Telecom as your mobile network provider as it will save you in a lot of communication troubles. As for me, ang lakas ko talaga sa Globe. ^_^

Microsoft Magic

This is one of the many forwarded messages I usually get everyday from my email. Although I’ve already knew some of this, it still quite amazes me to see “Easter Eggs”, or hidden programs, or bugs found within softwares.

Flight number of one of the planes that hit World Trade Center was Q33N. Follow the steps below and you will be amazed with the findings.
(1) Type Q33N in Microsoft Word document
(2) Change the font size of Q33N to 72
(3) Change the font type to windings.
The picture will reveal itself.

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the Computer which can be named as “CON“. This is something pretty Cool…and Unbelievable…. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn’t answer why this happened! TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE “CON” FOLDER.

For those of you using Windows, do the following:
(1) Open an empty notepad file
(2) Type “Bush hid the facts” (without the quotes)
(3) Save it as whatever you want.
(4) Close it, and re-open it.
is it just a really weird bug??

This is something pretty cool and neat…and unbelievable… At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn’t answer why this happened! It was discovered by a Brazilian. Try it out yourself…
Open Microsoft Word and type
=rand (200, 99)
And then press ENTER. Then see the magic………………………….

For more magic, bugs???, secrets, hidden stuff… go visit www.eeggs.com for your daily dose of secrets from TV to movies, from softwares to games. This is one of my favorite websites since I discovered this a couple of years ago. A small introduction posted at Tambayan.ph.

Memory Lane #1 is in Cubao

A couple of years ago, every Wednesday afternoon my dad prepares to go to Bicol. If I’m at home after class, I usually help him carry his luggage to our subdivision’s gate so he can wait for a ride to the bus terminal at Cubao. He does this every week, and goes back here in Manila on Sundays, or sometimes Monday’s. This is because he (a doctor/physician) has a clinic at Bicol. Actually it was 2 clinics, one is at Naga and the other at Legaspi. I got a chance to see it both when I went with him one time during my sembreak at college. That “one time” I had spent with my dad, going to Bicol and visiting places, was like a bonding time for us. And yes, I’m more close with my dad than with my mom, since he raised me on his own.

Today on my way home, I passed by the bus terminal in-front of Ali-Mall at Cubao. I remembered that same street my dad always passes through to get to the bus terminal. That same terminal which I “seldom” go to because of the fact that I don’t want to go back to the place where I was born from.

That memory lane where the memories of my dad still lingers deep within the recesses of my thoughts. My dad, whom I always disobey because of my rebellious attitude and my hardheadedness, is one of the closest people in my life. Who still helped me and supported me until the last days of his life.

I know that in the course of my life, I would only take that trip down to memory lane if one day I decided to visit my birth place. I never expected that day would be the day after tomorrow. I have to go with my mom because of a family reunion on my mother side was imminent to happen this weekend.

And the next time I go to that same lane, will be after a couple of years or maybe never again at all.
