Blocking with HOSTS file

This morning as I was surfing around and looking for a cure from this annoying Trojan in my computer. The spyware isn’t active coz it keeps getting blocked by my anti-virus software. But the Trojan is still there and cannot be removed. Anyhow I came across this old familiar site which you can download a HOSTS file to help protect your browsing experience from unwanted annoyance.

A short non-technical explanation for this is that HOSTS file redirects (or blocks) unwanted websites. But it’s more than that, it can also block harmful websites and even ads. So I downloaded the latest HOSTS file and placed it in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC directory (for winXP) and that’s it. When you browse using your favorite browser like… ehem… Firefox, you won’t get annoyed by ads and feel more secure about the sites you go to.

Then the problems began. After I visited Tambayan.ph I noticed that my Google Adsense was not showing up. I thought it was only in my connection, but when I visited Darkmoon forums also the Google Ads didn’t appeared. Also as I’ve noticed my Statcounter stats are gone from both Tambayan.ph and Eternalmoonlight.net. Not only that even MyBlogLog is missing. Although StatCounter is considered a tracking cookie and constantly removed by my anti-spywares. But I use it to track traffic on my websites.

So I went back to that HOSTS file, opened it up in notepad then searched for queries like; Google, ADsense, MyBlogLog, StatCounter, and any other stuff I don’t want to block. It has a huge list, around 16,000+ lines… thank God for the invention of CTRL+F I was able to remove the entries that I don’t want blocked.

And about that Trojan I mentioned earlier, I think I will try the solution I found at this insightful and helpful article.

79 months

… being with Joanne feels like quite a long time we’ve been with each other. Today is our 79th monthsarry, but we didn’t go out today. We’ve already went out yesterday at Trinoma, SM North, and SM Fairview (because there was a three day sale).

She works from Monday to Saturday so every time we are together, it seems like a precious time not to be wasted. Although she has work today, she didn’t go to it. Because she has a sore eyes or something. I don’t know but I’m also sick today, I’m running a fever. But still after sleeping twice today I can’t anymore sleep tonight. I’ll just play a game to pass time.

That fucked’ up electricity

I’ve been living in this roof (our house, my house) for almost 20 years. During the time I first had my own computer, that was around 1996 or earlier (I forgot), there’s this one problem that’s always bugging me, its our freaking electricity. The electricity in our neighborhood is quite unstable to say the least, it always fluctuates. I can’t remember how many times my computer restarted due to this dilemma. Usually the power lines here automatically shuts down when there is a loud thunder, and only that. Even if there is a heavy rain or even a storm, if there are no sudden thunder we still have power.

Last night, I was hit again by that fucked’ up electricity. It caught me by surprise since, I was dong multiple things in my computer, and yes it rained last night but there was no thunder. My Yahoo! messenger was open and my Google talk. Including my Feed Reader, Winamp, Firefox, and more importantly my password list. Yes, I do have a password protected password list, as I have so many accounts over the web and I have different passwords/usernames I don’t have the physical memory capacity to remember them all. After the glitch hit my computer rebooted, twice. Good thing my PC is plugged to a surge protector, and that outlet saved my computer for a very long time. I was using it back since my old PC’s. A sudden burst of electricity may very well damage your computer, power supply and the mobo (motherboard).

After my computer rebooted, it executes Scandisk, then when I got to my desktop imagine my horror. When I stated up Firefox, it lost its settings and all the plugins are “newly installed” meaning Firefox interpreted the add-ons (Stumbleupon, Google notebook, Google toolbar, etc.) as a fresh install applications. Not only that my cache was lost, and all of my cookies. Now I have to re-login to all the sites I’m normally auto-logged. The worst part is that, I almost lost my password list. Yeah, I usually backup my important files to a DVD-R every month or two, but this time I have made major changes on that very important list.

If not for the recovery software my list couldn’t have been recovered at all. It’s been due I know, but I really have to get a UPS for my PC, its not that I can’t afford one (since it’s already cheap nowadays), it’s just that every time I pass by a computer shop I fail to remember that I have to buy a UPS.

I told you I have a limited physical memory capacity. (@_@)

Tickle Results #2: The Brain Test

This is the result I got from The Brain Test (12/29/06) on Tickle. This is the full version of the result. And as usual this taken from the PHD-Certified category.

Ryman, you are Balanced-brained, which means that you rely equally on both the left and right hemispheres of your brain.

tickle_pr_balanced_auditory.gif

You have a balanced brain — able to draw on the strengths of both the right and left hemispheres depending on context. Typically, people with balanced right and left hemispheres are very comfortable with switching between local and global perspectives — that is, paying attention to both small details and larger issues when the circumstance indicates. That means they can identify elements that make up an image or situation and also attend to the larger, more holistic pattern or unified whole that those details comprise.

You are able to capitalize on the left hemisphere’s skills in verbal communication as well on the right hemisphere’s focus on patterns and association making. This rare combination makes you a very creative and flexible thinker.

Depending on the situation, you may rely on one hemisphere or the other. Some situations may lend themselves to using your right brain’s creativity and flexibility while other situations may call for a more structured approach as dictated by your left brain.

That’s how your brain processes information. And while your dominant brain hemisphere certainly contributes to the way you process information, there is also a style of learning, unrelated to your dominant hemisphere, that determines the ways in which you are best able to pick up information. When you’re learning something new, your dominant brain hemisphere will want to take over. But there are times when the information being presented is not well suited to your dominant hemisphere’s abilities.

That’s why, in addition to your hemispheric dominance, you also have a style of learning that is dominant for you. Whether you know it or not, you are naturally predisposed to learning things visually, aurally, or through a combination of the two.

Your test results show that you are an auditory learner.

Other balanced-brained people who are auditory learners are pop singer Madonna, classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and comedian and actor Robin Williams. But before delving deeper into how you learn, you should get the basics of your brain’s physiology.

Trackers update

Finally I fixed and updated my trackers, also known as Blog loggers. As you can see on my navi panel on the right all logs from MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, and Bumpzee are all consistent in their size and style. This is all thanks to the ultra useful (shameless promotion) Firefox plugin called Colorzilla. Using Colorzilla to figure out the exact CSS id of the loggers, I finally removed the annoying extra info and changed its style and color.

Using IFRAME and linking the loggers to an external HTML document, I can virtually change everything using that single file. Although I’m having problems previewing Bumpzee today because of their maintenance.

Simple and clean. ^_^
