That fucked’ up electricity

Posted by: Ryman   in Random Rants

I’ve been living in this roof (our house, my house) for almost 20 years. During the time I first had my own computer, that was around 1996 or earlier (I forgot), there’s this one problem that’s always bugging me, its our freaking electricity. The electricity in our neighborhood is quite unstable to say the least, it always fluctuates. I can’t remember how many times my computer restarted due to this dilemma. Usually the power lines here automatically shuts down when there is a loud thunder, and only that. Even if there is a heavy rain or even a storm, if there are no sudden thunder we still have power.

Last night, I was hit again by that fucked’ up electricity. It caught me by surprise since, I was dong multiple things in my computer, and yes it rained last night but there was no thunder. My Yahoo! messenger was open and my Google talk. Including my Feed Reader, Winamp, Firefox, and more importantly my password list. Yes, I do have a password protected password list, as I have so many accounts over the web and I have different passwords/usernames I don’t have the physical memory capacity to remember them all. After the glitch hit my computer rebooted, twice. Good thing my PC is plugged to a surge protector, and that outlet saved my computer for a very long time. I was using it back since my old PC’s. A sudden burst of electricity may very well damage your computer, power supply and the mobo (motherboard).

After my computer rebooted, it executes Scandisk, then when I got to my desktop imagine my horror. When I stated up Firefox, it lost its settings and all the plugins are “newly installed” meaning Firefox interpreted the add-ons (Stumbleupon, Google notebook, Google toolbar, etc.) as a fresh install applications. Not only that my cache was lost, and all of my cookies. Now I have to re-login to all the sites I’m normally auto-logged. The worst part is that, I almost lost my password list. Yeah, I usually backup my important files to a DVD-R every month or two, but this time I have made major changes on that very important list.

If not for the recovery software my list couldn’t have been recovered at all. It’s been due I know, but I really have to get a UPS for my PC, its not that I can’t afford one (since it’s already cheap nowadays), it’s just that every time I pass by a computer shop I fail to remember that I have to buy a UPS.

I told you I have a limited physical memory capacity. (@_@)
